Hands on Wine stumbled upon an interview that SA Property Magazine in the UK had with Kahn Morbee, frontman for leading SA rock band The Parlotones. There he mentioned that it has been a lifelong dream to own a wine farm and to create a boutique wine.
A group of talented people and a will to succeed, has ensured the birth of an exclusive red blend called Giant Mistake.
Available at the end of September 2009 at selected Woolworths outlets, Giant Mistake 2008 is a superb blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Shiraz (23%), Pinotage (12%) and Cabernet Franc (11%).
“Each cultivar was selected for its specific strengths to create a red blend that is as arousing and arresting on the palette as the band’s music is to the ears,” says Alan Mullins, Cape Wine Master.
Winemaker Pieter H. Walser says each of the cultivars represent a band member – exclusive wine notes shaped by The Parlotones. The cultivars for the blend were supplied by Hugo Truter, Pieter-Neil Roussouw, Allan Mullins and Pieter Walser.
Walser explains: “The Cabernet Sauvignon is the drummer or bassist that provides the core of the wine on which the rest of the cultivars will play. This cultivar provides the fruit, berry and black currant for the final blend. The Cabernet Franc with its good tannins is the lead guitarist; it provides the edge to the wine and rounds it off. Like the lead vocalist, the Shiraz adds the exotic spices to the final product, whilst the Pinotage with its plums and ripe, juicy berries is the boss, the producer that brings it all together.”
“When all these elements work together, you get a wine that goes from simply being great to extraordinary. Just like composing an award-winning song, creating a truly exceptional red blend is an art that takes time, patience and a deep understanding, knowledge as well as love for wine. And, of course, the will to create only the best,” says Mullins.
Morbee says: “My love affair with wine began when I realised that it had accompanied me throughout both momentous occasions and moments of heartache. But I guess I will have to wait a while before I can actually afford the wine farm.”

I am a fan of The Parlotones and I am over the word excited that they have decided to further produce wine.I am a huge fan of this group! I have an enquiry though, which company or wine cellar produced the wine and I would love to be part of that cellar or company as I have qualifications in Food Biotechnology and Food Science.
Hi Nwabisa. The Parlotones and Hands on Wine launched the product onto the market. The band put the wine together ‘with a little help from their friends’ and the wine was finalised at Wamakersvallei by winemakers Hugo Truter and Pieter-Neil Rossouw. It is such a nice compliment to us that you want to join our business. You are welcome to send your CV to siskha@handsonwine.net although I’m not aware of any openings at the moment. Please let us know what you think about the wine! Cheers. Siskha
